General Information

Lisgar Collegiate Institute has a 174-year-old tradition of excellence in Academics, the Arts, and Athletics where each student’s contribution to the learning environment is valued. Many of our graduates receive scholarships and awards from Canadian and American universities and colleges.

Goals

We value every student as an individual and we encourage every person to contribute to the Lisgar community and benefit from the learning experience.

Special Programs

Gifted Program

The Gifted Program in grades 9 to 12 provides an enhanced learning experience for students identified as intellectually gifted. Our Special Education Program supports these students as well as those with other learning exceptionalities.

Dual Support Program

Our Dual Support Program prepares students for the world of work and integration into the community.

International Advanced Placement Program

The International Advanced Placement Program (AP) allows students to receive equivalent credits for first-year courses at many universities in Canada, the United States, and other countries.

Lisgar Collegiate offers courses that have been reviewed, audited, and accredited by the College Board allowing us to grant Advanced Placement credits. In addition to the eight Advanced Placement Courses offered in grades 11 and 12, Lisgar Collegiate also offers AP Capstone. Lisgar Collegiate is the only school in Ottawa, and one of 27 schools in Canada to offer this unique program. AP Capstone is an innovative diploma program that provides students with an opportunity to engage in rigorous scholarly practice of the core academic skills necessary for successful university completion.

Specialist High Skills Major

Lisgar has recently introduced a Specialist High-Skills Major (SHSM) program in Hospitality and Tourism. This program offers students courses to develop culinary skills, certifications towards employment, and opportunities to work with professionals in the field for preparation of a variety of careers in the industry.

Highlights

  • Our Fine Arts Department features one of the oldest secondary school symphony orchestras in Canada.  Our ten performing ensembles continue to achieve high standards at local, provincial and national festivals.  As the only non-arts school in the city with a string program, Lisgar’s music curricula include full band, co-curricular choral and the strings programs.  Our students’ talents are highlighted through our full band program, including two Jazz Bands, and the multiple quartet appearances throughout the City of Ottawa and for the federal government for various ceremonies and events. On alternating years we provide our students with a European performance tour or a full scale Broadway musical.

  • Through extensive involvement and success in Math and Science contests, Lisgar consistently places among the top three schools in the Ottawa-Carleton region in the Pascal, Cayley, Fermat, and Euclid contests. Each year our students earn medals in the Canadian Open Math Challenge, Ontario East Division and are invited to write the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. Our students consistently achieve high standing in the Ontario Association of Physics Teachers Contest, Sir Isaac Newton Physics Contest, the Avogadro, Chem 13 News Contest, and the University of Toronto National Biology Competition.

  • We offer a Classical and International Language Program that includes Spanish and Latin courses that allow students to take a sequence of three courses to improve their language ability. No previous experience is required.

  • Lisgar students are actively involved in more than 45 co-curricular clubs, more than 20 competitive sports teams and 15 intramural sports.

  • Our Space Simulation Program looks at the mathematical, scientific and social questions of travel and life in space and runs an annual simulated Space Mission.

  • Lisgar has an illustrious record in academic quiz and debate tournaments. Since 2000, our "Reach for the Top" Team has been regional champion eleven times, has reached provincial playoffs almost every year, and in its four national finals appearances has finished third twice and won the national title twice (in 2008 and 2015). In "QuizBowl" Lisgar has been regional champion eight times in the last eleven years, and provincial champions five times since 2009. Lisgar was the first Canadian school ever to attend the U.S. National Championship (HSNCT) and the U.S. Partnership for Academic Competitive Excellence (P.A.C.E.) National Championship, qualifying every year since the mid 2000s. Lisgar's senior team won the first two Canadian History Bowls in 2015 and 2016, while individual Lisgar students took three of the top four places in the Canadian History Bee competition last year. Lisgar students also compete regularly in the Canadian Geography Challenge, and have placed in the top five twice in the last five years.

  • Our Improv team consistently reaches the National finals.
