This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms and techniques, using material from a wide range of sources and cultures. Students will use the elements of drama to examine situations and issues that are relevant to their lives. Students will create, perform, discuss, and analyse drama, and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them.

This course requires students to create and perform in dramatic presentations. Students will analyse, interpret, and perform dramatic works from various cultures and time periods. Students will research various acting styles and conventions that could be used in their presentations, and analyse the functions of playwrights, directors, actors, designers, technicians, and audiences.

Technical Theatre Production (Technology/Arts) IDC3OT
This interdisciplinary course will require students to work individually and collaboratively with forms of theatre as they relate to the management and production of live musical and theatrical events within the school. Students will build leadership and team skills needed to function effectively in the theatre environment and will also develop knowledge and technical skills relating to the operation and maintenance of a range of communications systems. As well, students will be participating in productions both as participants and as crew members in order to experience performance and production roles through a collaborative process that involves application of learning. Students will study industry standards, regulations, health and safety issues, explore careers and the importance of lifelong learning. The knowledge and skills they develop will provide a basis for careers in such areas as sound production, lighting design, set construction, stage management and various other fields in theatre.
COURSE NOTE: Students must commit to supporting school events from 3pm to 5pm during the semester as well as some evening and weekend practices as needed to provide support for various productions. Students are interviewed before acceptance into this course.
This is an interdisciplinary studies course and may not be used to fulfill the compulsory arts or group 3 credit requirements.

Students will examine relationships between art forms and individual and cultural identities, histories, and values. Design theory, history and illustration techniques will be integrated throughout the semester.

Visual Arts - Non-Traditional Art AWT3OI
This hands-on course is designed to explore new and emergent art forms with a specific focus on youth culture and expression. Based on the foundational skills of drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking, students will explore and transfer these media and techniques into contemporary forms of expression such as skateboard art, silk screening and digital media.
COURSE NOTE: It is recommended that students enroling in this course have also taken grade 9 or 10 visual or media arts (AVI1OI or AVI2OX or ASM2OI or AWA2OI)

Students will develop practical skills in the following areas: theoretical practices and terminology, photography and image manipulation, graphic design and layout, research, the writing of copy, computer skills and applications using industry-standard software and hardware, as well as marketing methods. Through team-based activities, students will develop essential inter-personal skills including time management, organization and accountability. These learned skills are directly applicable to a career in graphic design or journalism. Excellent attendance and a commitment to a minimum of one hour per week outside of class time is essential for success.

This course focuses on enabling students to refine their use of the creative process when creating and presenting two- and three-dimensional art works using a variety of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process to deconstruct art works and explore connections between art and society. The studio program enables students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques that can be applied in their own art production. Students will also make connections between various works of art in personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural contexts. Emphasis is placed on the areas of drawing and painting through work with figure drawing, portraiture, pen and ink drawing, and acrylic paint as well as some work in sculpture and printmaking.
